Considering colour when choosing wall art

The colour palette of your art plays a crucial role in setting the mood and atmosphere of your space. When selecting artwork, consider your existing colour scheme and choose shades that harmonize with it.

If you have a neutral room in terms of paint colour and furnishings, you may opt for artwork with vibrant hues to create a focal point.

You can make your rooms feel more cohesive by purchasing art with colours that match or compliment other elements that already exist in the room. Alternatively, adding decorations and accessories that contain colours from the artwork will emphasize the united feel of your home.

It is also important to consider the emotional impact of colour. Cool tones like blues and greens create a sense of calm and tranquility, while the intensity of oranges and yellows evoke feelings of warmth and happiness.

Think about the atmosphere you want to create in your space and choose colours that align with that vision.

The chart above is an indicator of colour symbolism in North America and although there may be variances depending on culture, these meanings are somewhat customary.

Determine the right size for your space

Choosing the right size for your landscape wall art is crucial to achieving the desired visual impact. It cannot be overstated that bigger is always better.

When the goal is to make a statement in any room, oversized prints become instant focal points with the power to change the character and energy in a space. Smaller pieces, however beautiful they may be, tend to become 'lost' and forgettable on large walls.

With minimalist design and neutral colours, this huge dining room wall is the perfect space for grand panoramic wall art with brilliant warm colour. The vibrant hues in the art are sure to spark passionate conversation among guests. 'Tranquility', Limited Edition of 150.

A good rule of thumb is to choose art that is at least two thirds to three quarters the size of the furniture that you are placing it over, or even slightly larger, to give it more distinction. This will create a visually pleasing balance that becomes an instant focal point in the room.

Use a tape measure to determine the height and width of the area where you want to hang the art. The artwork should fit the scale of the wall and be proportional to the space. Horizontal or panoramic pieces works better on wide walls, whereas vertical prints are better suited for taller, narrow walls.

Once you have the measurements, consider the overall aesthetic you want to achieve. If you are looking to create a bold statement, consider choosing a larger piece that fills a significant portion of the wall.

If you have a very large wall in a entranceway, hallway, or great room, use your creativity to design a 'gallery wall' to showcase one large oversized showpiece, or multiple smaller pieces that share a common theme.

Three different lava prints above compliment one other because of the similar subject and colour palette. Large spaces like these are a great opportunity to group together smaller pieces from the same artist that you enjoy.

The Importance of the print medium

Landscape photography wall art is available in a variety of mediums or 'print styles', and is usually chosen by three main factors:

• The level of quality you desire.

• where the art is to be installed.

• your budget.

The four most common mediums include acrylic face-mount, metal, paper, and canvas.

If you are searching for photographic wall art of the highest gallery-like quality, then look no further than the acrylic face-mount medium. When accent lighting is used with these special prints, they look 'backlit' like a computer or television screen.

Acrylics are the gold standard of photographic prints with unmatched vibrance, detail, and three-dimensional depth. Anti-glare acrylic is available to minimize reflections from overhead lights and bright windows. Acrylics come with a recessed floater frame on the rear so they are ready to hang.

Dye-sublimation metal prints are beautiful in any room, but they are the only choice for high humidity areas like bathrooms and kitchens, being waterproof and extremely durable with no risk of water damage.

With excellent detail and saturation, they are also available in high gloss or matte finishes, depending on if you have bright lights or windows which may introduce glare. These prints are also fit with a floater frame, and arrive ready to hang.

Paper prints can be very high quality and possess a fine level of detail and colour, while being the least expensive to buy in most cases. However, they will need to be mounted or framed before you can display them, which adds to the cost.

Close up corner details of canvas wall art prints.
For landscape wall art on a budget, canvas prints are an option, although they do not possess the quality and detail found in acrylic, metal, or paper prints.

Canvas prints are also budget-friendly and usually arrive stretched over a wooden frame, ready to hang. Be aware that the rough texture of canvas often obscures the fine details of an image, so they are not the best option if you desire fine art quality.

Accent Lighting and Custom Framing

When you view a photograph on a television or computer screen, remember that you are looking at projected light. Conversely, when you view wall art hanging in a room, you are viewing reflected light, which is the opposite.

Therefore, a lack of illumination with generally make artwork appear dark, especially at night or if there is no natural light in the room.

This is the reason why almost any wall art will benefit greatly from dedicated accent lighting, which is crucial to make it look its best. Having separate circuits with dimmer switches for general room lighting and accent lights allows the greatest control to create your desired ambiance in the evenings.

When the day fades to night, dedicated accent lighting makes your artwork the main focal point in the room. 'Diamond Beach', Limited Edition of 150.

Most photography prints have reactive properties that make them come alive with a glowing response when lighting is added, enhancing depth and brightening the colours with greater intensity.

This extra light will put your new art piece at the center stage so it commands attention as a breathtaking focal point in your home, especially in the evening when the ambient light of day has faded away.

And finally, professional custom framing will also elevate your photography print to a higher level of refinement. Beautiful wood frames will add grandeur to the environment in your home, with the added benefit of blending the artwork with your interior décor and architecture.
