<image:title>The Tetons and the Snake River (2024)</image:title>
 <image:caption>In 1941 the National Park Service commissioned photographer Ansel Adams to provide photographs of protected lands within National Parks to display as murals to decorate the Department of the Interior Building in Washington, DC.
In the early summer of 1942, Ansel stood at this very location and captured his famous image entitled 'The Tetons and the Snake River (1942)'. A mural sized print of the image became Adams' most expensive photograph in December of 2020, when it sold at a Sotheby's auction for $988,000.
This photograph from the Snake River Overlook in 2024 was my best effort of an intentional homage to Ansel's original image. Although the vigorous growth of the trees in the foreground over the last 80 years has obscured most of the river, the beauty of the scene and his vision is still undeniable.

The design was inspired by volcanic basalt columns which are common throughout the country, most notably in places like Svartifoss. Although commissioned in 1937, the church was not fully completed until 1986. <image:title>Puffin Love</image:title>
 <image:caption>The adorable Atlantic Puffin can be seen in abundance in Iceland, most notably at Hafnarhólmi in the northeast. These cold water sea birds spend autumn and winter at sea, where they feed on small fish and crabs by diving underwater. They also molt during this time, making them unable to fly.
In the spring after their new feathers sprout, they fly back to land and nest in clifftop colonies where a single egg is laid in their burrow. The baby 'pufflings' grow quickly and leave the nest in six weeks, not returning to land for several years.
Although well adapted for life at sea, they are comically awkward on land. We witnessed several crash landings, roll-overs, and squabbles, while their waddling gait and colourful beaks give them the nickname 'clowns of the sea'.

Restored in the 1950s, it is one of only six left in Iceland and is protected as a historical monument.
The timber structure is surrounded by rock walls and stone slabs for the roof, while being partially buried in the ground and covered with turf which provides natural insulation.

The colors vary greatly depending on their iron rich mineral content and exposure to sunlight, oxygen, heat, and pressure when they were formed.
The last glaciers broke up the rocks, which were washed away in rivers and are now deposited throughout the many lakes in the park. Short summers keep the water very cold, prohibiting plant growth which results in the amazing crystal clear water.

 <image:caption>This unique image was captured near the Paint Pots of Kootenay National Park in British Columbia. The fascinating mineral spring system deposits ochre in the soil, producing the rich orange colour in the mud and water.
The ochre was harvested by the Ktunaxa people for use as pigments several hundred years ago and later collected for use in paint manufacturing until the park was established in 1920.
The ripples in this shallow stream over a bed of ochre reflect a beautiful golden hue in the early morning sun.

 <image:caption>'Sunwapta' is a word from the Indigenous Stoney language that means 'turbulent water'. It is a perfect description of these falls which drop over 60 feet into the pool below. This morning revealed a rare mixture of beautiful light, mist, fog and low clouds flowing through the mountain valley. Equally rare is the perfect left and right symmetry of the island, trees, river and falls, unlike any scene I have witnessed before.

I've always loved how weather patterns flow through the mountains, and this morning was magical. After a night of rain, the low cloud and mist will often form around the mountains, sometimes completely enveloping them. The waiting game ensues, and if you're lucky, the sun might break through at just the right moment, lighting up the peaks in full drama.

These are two of the famous Three Sisters of Canmore; Charity and Hope. The third peak, Faith, refused to show her face that morning.

A dawn that I won't soon forget.

 <image:caption>
The powerful ocean waves surge and drain through an eroded lava bench at sunset on the west coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. The water would bellow up through the hole quite frequently, flooding the rock and seaweed before draining back down and disappearing until the next wave came along. For scale, this hole was probably at least 10-12 feet across, and the last thing you wanted to do was get too close to the edge. Each water surge was different from the last, at times very powerful and swirling up around your legs with a lot of force as it drained. If one was to fall in, you probably wouldn't return.

A sundog is an atmospheric optical phenomenon that consists of a bright spot to one or both sides of the sun, usually in a 22-degree halo. They are caused by the refraction of sunlight by ice crystals in the atmosphere. At minus 30 degrees Celsius on this winter morning in the Canadian Rockies, a beautiful and bright specimen glows through the heavy trees after an overnight snowfall. It was a treat to watch the ice crystals glitter and sparkle as they floated through the crisp morning air.

 <image:caption>
I had the idea of making this image of Mount Chephren, moonlit from the side to really show the texture of that famous face and hopefully some nice ice formations in the foreground. After studying the pattern of the moon's position, I was able to determine that I had a window of about 1 1/2 hours on a certain day at a certain time to make this a reality. I slept on the side of the road in my Jeep, set my alarm for 12:30 am, and hoped for the best. The stars aligned for me as I awoke to a clear sky and some adrenalin. I put on my waders, snowshoes, and backpack, setting off through the bush and down the lakeshore in the darkness with my trusty headlight.

It was just an awesome feeling as the whole night came together seamlessly. The crisp winter air, starlit skies, and sounds of rushing water were a symphony to my senses, like a beautiful song.

 <image:caption>
As you travel westward in southern Alberta, Crowsnest Mountain and the Seven Sisters is a sight to behold as they welcome you into the Canadian Rockies.
Snowshoeing up a steep mountain trail before sunrise in the dark in cougar country can be somewhat disconcerting. I stopped periodically to shine my headlight into the bushes, hoping not to find any shiny eyes blinking back at me. So far, so good.
I could hear the wind begin to howl as I approached my viewpoint on an open nub. As I crested the hill, it was like being hit by a tidal wave. I was almost knocked on my butt by a gust of wind so strong that my hood was flapping like a flag in a 100 mph gale. Seriously, I have no idea how the 500-600-year-old limber pines in the area survive that daily onslaught.
It's funny how when you're in the thick of it on a crazy morning like this, you often wonder if maybe you're just a little nuts to be there in the first place. But the memories I have from all of these adventures are priceless to me, and I know that there's no place I'd rather be than exploring Mother Nature.
