Witnessing the flow of molten lava is a truly unforgettable experience. Most of the pictures in this gallery were captured while hanging out of the side of a doors-off helicopter over the east rift zone on the Big Island of Hawaii, hovering 25 feet above the ground.
Lava can effuse from the earth in a variety of forms like fountains, lakes, or fissures in the earth's crust. I witnessed two types of flows that morning; pāhoehoe which has a smooth or ropey surface, and ʻaʻā which is characterized by a rough and broken surface of blocks called clinker.
I was privileged to experience the location from the air in March of 2018, as only eight weeks later the massive Puna eruption event began and lasted for over seven months, altering the landscape forever.
These unique lava photographs produced as large prints never fail to draw attention when I display them at art shows. They make a bold statement in your home, guaranteed to inspire conversation and wonder with your friends and guests.
