Crescent Falls | Bighorn River, Canyon, Alberta

The Canadian Rockies are a treasure trove of natural wonders, and Crescent Falls is no exception. Tucked away in west-central Alberta along the rugged Bighorn River, its unique double-tiered drop plunges a total of 90 feet into the rocky canyon below, creating a mesmerizing display of power. The constant roar of the falls echoes off the cliffs, creating an unforgettable sensory experience.

Capturing this image, however, was far from simple. It required meticulous planning, countless hours of preparation, and a willingness to embrace the challenges of the location. After setting up late at night, I spent hours in the darkness, waiting patiently for the moon to position itself and illuminate the scene. But the solitude came with its own risks. With nothing but my headlamp to break the shadows, I found myself frequently glancing over my shoulder, aware that cougars are known to roam these remote areas.

While the effort and unease paid off with this unique image of a lifetime, it’s not an experience I’d be eager to repeat anytime soon. Yet, moments like these—the thrill of being exposed and alone in the darkness, and the satisfaction of capturing its beauty—are what make landscape photography so rewarding.
