Rainbow (Waiānuenue) Falls | Hilo, Hawaii

Rainbow Falls is a gorgeous 80-foot (24-meter) waterfall located along the Wailuku River in Hilo, Hawaii. Cascading gracefully over a rugged lava rock ledge, the falls plunge into a tranquil turquoise pool below, surrounded by lush, tropical rainforest.
Its name, "Rainbow Falls," is derived from the frequent rainbows that form in the mist when sunlight filters through the spray—most commonly visible on clear mornings around 10 a.m., offering a magical experience for visitors.
Having not arrived at an optimal hour, and under cloudy conditions, capturing this famous waterfall in black and white allowed me to simplify the scene - stripping away the complexity of the surrounding vegetation while focusing on the texture of the flowing water and interplay of light and shadow.
Beyond its natural beauty, Rainbow Falls is steeped in Hawaiian mythology and cultural significance. It flows over a natural lava cave that is said to be the mythological home of Hina, the ancient Hawaiian goddess of the moon. According to legend, Hina found refuge in this cave, where she wove kapa (bark cloth) and lived in harmony with the surrounding elements.
The site is not only a natural wonder but also a place of spiritual reverence, where the stories of Hawaiian deities and their connections to nature continue to echo through time.
